SENSEI at ECOC 2025

Scientists from INRiM, Politecnico di Torino, Fondazione LINKS, Open Fiber and INGV presented results related to the SENSEI project during ECOC 2025, Europe’s most prestigious conference in the field of optical communications, that was held in Copenhagen the last week of September.

  • SENSEI coordinator, Cecilia Clivati from INRiM, presented latest results from the project and highlighted the path toward integrating fiber sensing into conventional telecom architectures, to improve scalable network supervision and environmental monitoring. She presented joint progress by INRiM, Politecnico di Torino, Fondazione LINKS, Open Fiber and INGV on detecting, distinguishing and localizing seismic and anthropogenic events through forward fiber sensing. She also described their plan and progress on the design of an advanced network telemetry management, in which fiber sensing data are seamlessly combined with conventional telemetry to give network operators richer insight and control and improve storage and collection abilities. This approach will enable smarter network management, enhanced infrastructure resilience, and systematic environmental data collection for scientific research. (see the abstract)

  • Emanuele Virgillito from Politecnico di Torino presented recent results on the implementation of a multi-technique sensing testbed in central Italy, developed together with INRiM, INGV, Fondazione LINKS and Open Fiber. The testbed implements both phase and polarization sensing in coexistence with high-speed data traffic, and is in a highly seismic Italian region, with rich coverage of conventional seismometers. Combination of conventional and fiber sensing techniques can improve event recognition abilities, data validation and in-depth quantitative analysis, with a special focus on seismic monitoring.
