SENSEI at EGU25

Scientists from INRiM, the University of Malta, GFZ, ISOR and INGV joined the EGU General Assembly 2025 in Vienna (Austria) during the last week of April to present results related to the SENSEI project:

  • INRIM and the University of Malta, in collaboration with the Maltese telecom company Epic and scientists from Ifremer, MBARI, and Dalhousie University, presented results (I. Schulten et al., Fiber sensing with internet cables: Monitoring offshore oceanographic and geological processes in the central Mediterranean Sea) on the use of laser phase interferometry for monitoring oceanographic and offshore geological events using a telecom cable deployed in the Mediterranean Sea between Sicily (Italy) and Malta. Thanks to its long reach, manageable data size, and coexistence with telecom data transmission, laser phase interferometry appears suitable for long-term monitoring, potentially allowing observation of seasonal trends and rare events.
The figure shows a spectrogram of an entire month of laser interferometry before and after plugging the submarine portion of the Sicily-Malta cable (which occurred on Sept. 7th, 2022). The signature of various oceanographic processes was investigated, as well as microseisms induced by wind-sea interaction and daily effects due to anthropogenic noise.

  • Scientists from GFZ, ISOR, INGV presented results of dynamic strain recorded on a fibre optic cable during eruptions on Reykjanes Peninsula (results to be published soon).
