Scientists from Nokia Bell Labs and from Politecnico di Torino joined the OFC25 conference in San Francisco (US) first week of April to present results in relation with SENSEI:
- Nokia Bell Labs team presented a paper titled “Demonstration of MIMO-DFS over 100km of unamplified SSMF Link using Active Laser Drift Stabilization and Optimized Probing Codes”, highlighting results on Coherent MIMO-DFS (Multiple Input Multiple Output-Distributed Fiber Sensing) using Stabilized lasers where they showed that tailored laser stabilization enables MIMO-DFS to perform distributed acoustic sensing on fiber distances over 100kms.
- Rajiv Boddeda from Nokia Bell Labs also presented a paper titled “High-Resolution Coherent DFS Over 20km Ultra-Low-Loss Anti-Resonant Hollow-Core Fiber with Live Traffic” at the Post deadline session of OFC25, highlighting results on Coherent DFS over the Hollow core fibers (HCF) (see picture). They showed for the first time Coherent DFS over ultra-low loss hollow core fibers, achieving ultra-high resolution HCF characterization and acoustic sensing (dee figure).

- Emanuele Virgillito, from Politecnico di Torino, presented a paper titled “Experimental Validation for Early Earthquake Detection Using Transfer Learning”. In a collaboration with Links Foundation, SM-Optics (both SENSEI consortium partners) and the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, Emanuele Virgillito’s team replicated the earthquake SOP (State of Polarization) time evolution on a real signal and propagated it on a 38 km deployed fiber ring in the city of Turin and acquired the output SOP to get realistic ambient noise. The propagated dataset has been used to apply transfer learning on a previously trained machine learning (ML) model with full synthetic dataset with an LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory)-attention model, achieving 98% accuracy in early earthquake detection.
